Heads to roll as FG plans a review of shady employments from 2016


These are not the best of times for Heads in Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals who failed to comply with Federal Character principle in its employment exercise as the Federal Government has bowed to pressure from Nigerians to investigate allegations that most employments into the Civil Service since 2016 lacked merits and were extended to close family members, associates and proxies of top government functionaries, politicians and other social actors.

It would be recalled that Nigerians have been raising their voices against what they termed the height of nepotism and favouritism where most employment opportunities benefitted only those who have people in government who could speak and lobby for them.  Those employments did not follow Federal Character Principle that stipulates that employment into the Federal Civil Service must follow due process and conform to Federal Character principles.  2016 witnessed the surge of this anomaly necessitating government’s plan to probe into the allegations and reports that have been made against some highly placed public servants.

According to information availed LeadingReporters, the FG through a letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation dated 17th May, 2017 has directed all the Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Heads of all Government Agencies, Parastatals and Department, including government-owned private or public quoted companies to avail it list of all workers employed in 2016.  The list, according to the letter must include evidence that the employing MDAs complied with the Federal Character Principles.

LeadingReporters could authoritatively reveal that the objective of the exercise is to purge Civil Service of every form of corruption bordering on nepotism and favouritism.

Those who may heavily pay for such acts of corruptions are the HODs, Permanent Secretaries and DGs if found culpable of abating shady employment, including those said to have commercialized employment opportunities in their offices.

A close source who spoke to LeadingReporters on condition of anonymity from the office of the SGF confirmed that so far, all the petitions against heads of government institutions who have previously engaged in the nefarious act of employing people without recourse to the Federal Character principle would be seriously looked into and anyone found culpable shown the way out.  Such would include prosecution of those found culpable.  This according to the source is to further convince Nigeria that President Muhammadu Buhari is not a sectional leader, but a President who wants things to be done in line with the laws of the land.  The source further confirmed that the exercise would convince the doubting Thomas that President Buhari anti corruption fight is all-encompassing and would sweep through every form and phase of corruption, including nepotism.
